SP23 ENGL 563 Seminar Themes and Movements, J B Capino TOPIC: U.S. Independent Cinema - The critic Annette Insdorf famously wondered if US independent cinema is aptly characterized as “[that corpus of films that] treat inherently American concerns with primarily European style.” Though deeply problematic in many respects, this notion has arguably informed the reception, historiography and critique of much of what is affectionately called the “American indie.” This seminar guides students in surveying and reevaluating the scholarship on a diverse range of independent filmmaking practices in the US with the aim of generating new scholarly and pedagogical projects on this vaunted but narrowly conceived object of study.
