SP23 ENGL 373 - Anustup Basu - TOPIC: Science Fiction Cinema: This is not a survey course tracing the evolution of science-fiction cinema across decades, even though we will look at a sampling of sci-fi films beginning from the silent era. The objective will instead be to look at key films from different moments in history, connecting them to immediate historical environments (fascism, Cold War, McCarthyism, Space and Nuclear Races, Vietnam, globalization and corporatism, artificial intelligence, robotics, genetic engineering etc.), to cultish imaginations (aliens, UFOs etc.), and apocalyptic fears (nuclear holocaust, environmental catastrophe). We will explore how humans have always met technological innovations and rapid social transformations with elation and hope, as well as fear and anxiety. The course will feature artistic and cerebral cinema from across the world like Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville (1965) and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker (1979) as well as Hollywood blockbusters like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Spielberg, 1977), Total Recall (Verhoeven, 1990), and Inception (Nolan, 2010). Students will be expected to read critical essays, make group presentations, and write short responses to films, and two papers.
