SP23 ENGL 301 - Patrick Fadely: ENGL 301 offers an introductory survey of major developments in Critical Theory, with an emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There are two main goals for this course: first, to present an overview of the authors, concepts, and movements that make up the canon of theory; and second, to provide a supportive, structured space in which you can practice reading and making sense of theoretical texts. For some of you, this class will be your first such encounter with the texts of major writers like Marx, Freud, and Butler. But be at ease: there is no expectation that anyone needs to master these texts. All that is required to succeed is a willingness to read with an open mind and the dedication to stay with the material. Reading theory can be a rewarding, illuminating, and even exhilarating experience, even if it can sometimes be difficult. The structure of this course tries to maximize the former set of responses by giving you room to discover for yourselves what Theory has to say, and to respond inquisitively and creatively to what interests you. **Non-majors who wish to take ENGL 301 may email englishadvising@illinois.edu to request an override.**
