Section Info:
SP23 ENGL 120, Science Fiction, Melissa Littlefield Clones! Martians! Robots! This course will introduce you to science fiction, a genre that expresses some of our culture's deepest fears, as well as its greatest hopes. We'll look back at the origins of the genre, but we'll also tackle contemporary technological and social issues. Our primary question this semester is: what does it mean to be human? and most of our readings are geared towards that end. Texts include radio broadcasts, short stories, novels, and films, all drawn from a wide variety of voices and contexts that represent the inclusivity of the genre: Octavia Butler, Mary Shelley, Clifford Johnson, Kate Wilhelm, Malka Older and more. Assignments will likely include weekly wikis, collaborative writing, and a final "Human Design" project. No exams! PLEASE NOTE: This course is completely online. We'll meet via Zoom and use Canvas for our home base.
