SP23 ENGL 380 Topics in Writing Study, Cathy Prendergast - TOPIC: Writing for Money - This course is designed to study and practice freelance writing. Why write for money? Whether your goal is to be a creative writer, a commercial writer, or simply improve your writing in college, aiming to have people pay to read your writing helps you do your best work. You will have the opportunity write what you feel suits you best: creative writing, non-fiction prose, technical writing, commercial writing—all are fine. You will also have the opportunity to try something new and out of your comfort zone. You don’t have to succeed in making money or in getting published (this is a college class after all). Previous students who have taken the class have published in various genres: magazine article, personal essay, fiction, poetry, and even a recipe. Many alumni who have taken this course have gone on to make their living through freelance writing. Obviously this course is writing intensive. WRITING IS DUE USUALLY TWICE WEEKLY. Please consider your overall schedule before committing to the class.
