Section Info:
SP23 ENGL 360 Environmental Writing, Jamie Jones -This class equips students to write about the environment for various audiences, with a focus on specific current efforts to research the environment and promote environmental responsibility on the Urbana-Champaign campus. We will practice effective techniques for each stage of the writing process—from defining topics, to gathering information, to crafting active, engaging prose. Readings will include models of effective environmental writing and “how to” pieces by experts. Research will include visits to campus sites and student-conducted interviews with subjects. In this section of ESE/ENGL 360, we will be writing about food, water, and energy resource systems. We will survey the traditions of writing about these resources in literature and journalism, and we will also explore the interaction of these resource systems in our local community. Students will also have the opportunity to meet working journalists, and to practice professional skills like interviewing, conducting historical research, and drafting pitch letters
