SP23 ENGL 270, American Film Genres, Jim Hansen - TOPIC: The Cinema Of Fear - Drawing its power to delight and terrify from a legacy of Gothic and Romantic literature and from the camera’s capacity to depict fantastic subjects, horror cinema has often been viewed as a sordid genre, disparaged for its sensationalism and its excessive violence. This course will present a critical and historical survey of the cinematic horror genre as it has developed in American and British cinema from the silent era to the early 21st century. Along the way, we will discuss the genre’s tropes and conventions, the relationship of horror to various social and cultural norms, the intersections between horror and science fiction, and the range of ideologies the genre has represented over the years. Course Requirements will include daily participation, weekly reading responses, two exams, and three movie review essays. Films will include The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Bride of Frankenstein, Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Living Dead, The Exorcist, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Halloween, The Shining, The Thing (1982), The Fly (1986), Scream, The VVitch, and Get Out
