SP23 ENGL 204 Renaissance Lit and Culture - Catharine Gray - This course offers an introduction to some of the main themes and concerns of the Renaissance, particularly as these developed in Britain during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. We will study a range of genres--including poetry, prose, and drama--paying close attention to the way Renaissance texts are often born in dialogue and debate or developed in self-conscious imitation, rejection, or revision of other texts. We will also explore both what is strange and familiar to us in works from this time, focusing on issues of gender, sexuality, and love; political power and conflict; religious and racial identities and differences; and competing models of heroism, exploration, and conquest. In particular, we will analyze early modern culture’s belief in, and anxiety about, both the malleability of identity and identity’s performative nature. Can identities be shaped to conform to social ideals or manipulate others? And what is the relation between the outer shows and hidden inner lives of Renaissance selves?
