Civil War and Reconstruction

The United States' civil war (1861-1865) and the years of postwar "reconstruction" (conventionally dated as 1865-1877). During this period as a whole, the nation underwent its second revolution -- a revolution more radical in its impact than the one that freed it from the British Empire. Much about U.S. history for the next century and more was decided during these critical years.

Day, T	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/25/21-05/05/21 Section Info: Description: This course will examine the US Civil War, both as an event and as a moment of American memory. Beginning with the war itself, this course will consider the stories of different Americans: soldiers, civilians, the enslaved, etc. to explore how the war was experienced. In the second part of the course we will look at the impact of the war, both the immediate aftermath and in the Reconstruction period to consider how (if at all) the US changed after 1865. Finally, the course will explore the memory of the Civil War, and tie together the experiences and aftermath of the war with the ways in which it is memorialized, remembered, re-enacted, and discussed in the contemporary.
