SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Teaches students how to apply historical thinking to present day problems. Each version starts with contemporary headlines about a current issue, moves to an investigation of its historical roots and legacies, and pivots back to the present to assess the impact of past history on present reality and to capture those relationships in a collaborative student project. It aims to show, in short, how and why history matters NOW.

Section Info: This section will have distributed classroom attendance with supplemental instruction. You will receive an email from the instructor with specific attendance directives. Description: This course looks at race and resistance against organized racism from the epidemic of lynching to the northern urban race riots in the 1910s, 1940s, 1960s, to predatory exclusion regimes, to modern urban policing, such as the infamous torture practices in Burge’s Chicago Police Department. We also dig into the history of hate crimes against racial, religious, and sexual minorities, to understand the new anti-Semitism, anti-Islam, homophobia, and the standoff between far right extremism, such as the KKK and the Neo-Nazis, and antifascist forces in our own time. The course requires attendance of F2F lectures where possible, remote discussion sessions as well as book and document reviews, and two examinations. The readings include primary documents, visual sources, and key texts such as the New Jim Crow, Locking Up Our Own, Policing the Crisis, Mobilizing New York.
