History Harvest: Collaborative Digital Public History

Credit: 3 hours.

Students work with instructor and community collaborators to host a "History Harvest," an event during which community members share personal stories about and artifacts related to a particular event, historical development, and/or place. The class will catalog the images and recordings gathered and use them to present digital exhibits. Students will develop hands-on experience with these skills.

May be repeated to a maximum of 6 undergraduate hours, if topics vary.

Description: In a “History Harvest” course, students work with instructor and community collaborators to host events during which community members contribute documents and artifacts and stories related to a particular historical theme. The theme for the Spring 2021 History Harvest course is “Building Community through LGBTQIA+ and Independent Media Organizations and Networks in Urbana-Champaign.” It is inspired by current hunger for gathering and preserving history within and about two communities: the LGBTQIA+ community and its institutions, and the Independent Media Center, a center for gathering and communication among a variety of local community groups, who will be our collaborators in collecting, digitizing, and interpreting documents from these histories. We will endeavor to do this in a hybrid format, meeting in person as it is safe, but doing some of our collecting, cataloging and exhibit-making remotely as needed.
