Section Info: Description: This course examines the history of people of African descent in the United States from the colonial era to Reconstruction. Although the main focus will be on the United States, this course will take seriously the ways that cultural, economic, political, and social formations transcended national boundaries, making the experiences of African-American people at once similar to and distinct from the experiences of people of African descent elsewhere in the diaspora. Key topics include the transatlantic slave trade, Atlantic slavery, the expansion of U.S. domestic slavery, the U.S. internal slave trade, the construction of race and gender, enslaved people's strategies for resistance and survival, political activity in enslaved and free black communities, the Civil War, emancipation, and Reconstruction.
