Subjects covered include the advance of military technology, the evolution of military theory, the development of staffs and doctrine, the phenomenon of total war, the character of insurgency, and the rise of global terrorism. Conflicts studied in some detail include the U.S. Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Middle East wars, and the "war" on terrorism. The material presented is specifically designed to interest a wide range of students who want to know more about the history of armed conflict. The course is offered online out of concern for student convenience and safety. “Online” entails no sacrifice in quality; Prof. Lynn’s online history of terrorism, summer 2020, scored high enough with its students to put him on the university’s “List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent.” Restriction(s): Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
