SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Survey of U.S. history from the end of the Civil War to the present, focusing on struggles to achieve a multiracial democracy, the evolution of an industrial, urbanized, and pluralistic society, the intersections between domestic and global affairs, and the practice of historical interpretation. Epoch-making events and elites are considered in light of their relation to the activities and lives of ordinary people, including people of color, immigrants, women, and the working and middle classes.

Credit is not given for both HIST 172 and HIST 173.

Students must register for one discussion and one lecture section.

Section Info: Description: This history survey will examine the development of the United States since 1877: a year of consequence marked by the Electoral College settling a disputed election by declaring Rutherford B. Hayes (who lost the popular vote) president, thus ending Reconstruction (March); the surrender of Crazy Horse a year after the Lakota defeated General George Custer’s Seventh Calvary (May); and labor strikes and violence that roiled industry and halted cities from Baltimore to St. Louis (July-September). From the Gilded Age to the twenty-first century, students will examine the social movements, political debates, and economic disruptions, that shaped—and divided—the nation as it transitioned from a semi-rural agrarian society to an industrialized international power. Students will develop their analytical skills as they interpret primary sources that reflect the diversity of perspectives in the United States.
