ADV 492

Spring 2026 All Classes

All Classes

Credit: 3 hours.

With the maturation of the internet as an advertising and media channel, advertising, journalism, and communications students need to know more about technology and how that impacts their messages and designs. Likewise, computer scientists could benefit from knowledge of what the end user is looking for when designing web content, applications and other web-based media. Students in this course will gain design knowledge as well as a hands-on experience in completing a technology-driven advertising campaign. Students will participate in engineering, advertising and project management activities with individual as well as team responsibilities.

Same as CS 468. 3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. Credit is not given for ADV 492 and ADV 498. Prerequisite: CS 225 or consent of instructors. Junior or senior standing in Advertising or Computer Science.

There will be no exceptions and the current restrictions will not be lifted. All other ADV seniors must take ADV 498. Please email your academic advisor if you are unsure if you can take this course. At no time will seats be opened to non-majors; see CS 468. Please note: Duplicate credit on ADV 492 and 498 is now being enforced. Effective Fall 2024, students will only receive credit toward graduation for either ADV 492 OR ADV 498. Enrolling in both courses will be seen as duplicate credit; the second course will not count toward hours required for graduation. This project-based course will allow teams of media and computer science students to use technology platforms to solve problems supplied by industry clients. Each student will bring their expertise to the problem at hand. Media students will learn capabilities and limitations of different technology platforms, how the end user will be impacted by technology decisions, and how they can help achieve advertising objectives with their code design. This 6 hour class has 4 contact hours each week. Students will be expected to make up the additional 2 hours of credit each week outside of class.
