Topic: Race, Science, and Medicine Description: This course examines the development of race in medical and scientific thought; how public health and medical institutions deploy the concept; and the process by which race emerged as a valid, though controversial, topic of scientific and biomedical inquiry. Also addressed is the relationship between slavery and nineteenth-century medicine, the birth of the eugenics movement, legacies of medical exploitation and mistrust, trends in genetic medicine, and contemporary disparities in health outcomes and health care delivery.
