Topic: This course is a survey of British and British Empire history from the early modern period to the twentieth century, with an eye to how the history and memory of empire continued to inform present-day issues and identities. We will utilize both historical and cultural texts, examine colonial and postcolonial histories of the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, and incorporate race, gender, and resistance into our analysis of how Britain - as both nation-state and empire - interacted with and was shaped by the world.
