Description: This course offers a view of the first half of the twentieth century from the Global South. Beginning with the Berlin Conference (1884) and moving through the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, The Great Depression, World War II, and concluding with the beginnings of anti-colonial movements, we will try to understand these major historical moments as told from the perspectives of peoples in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. We will pay particular attention to the British, Japanese, and American empires. By the end of the semester, we hope to have a command of not only the major global historical events of the first half of the century, but also of the ways in which those events were experienced outside of Europe and the United States.
