This survey of United States history from 1800-1900 will cover a periodduring which the nation changed from a sparsely settled agrarian republic to an industrial powerhouse with aspiration to world power. The class will emphasize a variety of topics in political and social history of the nineteenth century, including the development of the U.S. West, African American lives in slavery and freedom, the struggle for women's rights and immigration from Europe and Asia.
