Description: "'Hamilton' and History: Are They in Sync?" asked a 2016 New York Times headline. Hamilton - as well as other fictionalized accounts of historical people and events across a variety of media - offers the opportunity to interrogate what it means to be "in sync" with history - and what it means to reinforce or challenge national myths. This course uses fictional accounts, including film, literature, theatre, and video games, to interrogate both the practice of fictionalizing history and the ways in which these fictions create, sustain, or challenge popular American mythologies. We will progress chronologically beginning with fictions about Massachusetts Puritans and ending with treatments of the US suffrage movement and the Great War. By the end of the course, students will gain an appreciation for the variety of methods by which historical knowledge is expressed, the role national mythologies play in understanding history, and the political and cultural uses of fictionalized history.
