- Section Title:
- American Music Historiography
- Section Info:
- Topic: "AMERICAN MUSIC HISTORIOGRAPHY AND PEDAGOGY." This course is designed to prepare students to research and teach topics in American music studies. The study of American music has expanded from emphasis on musicians and musical practices in the continental United States to a more inclusive framework addressing music making throughout the Americas and around the world. The course features a dual emphasis on historiography, the ways that the history of American music has been written, and pedagogy, the ways that history has been taught. To that end, students will compare approaches to writing American music history, explore articles and journals devoted to American music, and apply the knowledge gained from that to prepare an undergraduate course. The course preparation will include the creation of a syllabus, the selection of readings and listening for sample class meetings, and the leadership of one of those class meetings—many of the things search committees require of faculty job candidates.
