Section Title:
Cultural Study of Jazz
Section Info:
Topic: "THE CULTURAL STUDY OF JAZZ." This seminar will introduce students to the academic study of jazz. Its aims are twofold. First, we will explore how scholars have endeavored to study the music in itself: writing and debating its history, challenging its stylistic or national borders, or exploring the social relations that are built on and off the bandstand and that animate jazz as a practice. Second, we will consider jazz as a significant part of American culture, as well as its many echoes around the world. This includes thinking about jazz’s connections to other art forms, its entanglements with racial and gender ideology, or its participation in American imperialism, among many other things. While we will focus on jazz, this seminar will introduce students to issues and methodologies that are applicable to the study of popular music broadly speaking. Students are not expected to have prior knowledge of jazz history, to be fluent readers of Western music notation, or to know how to play an instrument. Final projects include research and creative options.
Restriction(s):
