Provides an orientation to the organization, teaching and administration of music in the college or university. Includes topics such as preparing for and securing a college/university faculty position, promotion and tenure, faculty ethics and evaluation, and personnel/personal relations.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing in music or music education.

Section Info:
The course is designed to help prepare graduate students in the School of Music for careers in post-secondary education. It explores the culture of contemporary colleges and universities, a variety of professional roles that shape music in those contexts, the impact of rapid change in higher education, and the resultant need for versatility, adaptability, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and institutional citizenship. The format will include lecture and discussion, written and oral exercises and assignments, active, weekly class engagement by all, and a variety of guests bringing unique perspectives on the culture and organization of music in higher education. The 4-credit option also requires a substantial final project.
