Section Title:
Ralph Vaughan Williams
Section Info:
Topic: "ENGLISHNESS AND COMMUNITY IN THE WORK OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS." The life’s work of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams—whether as conductor, composer, folksong collector, writer, or hymnal editor—is often reduced, in the popular imagination, to a one-dimensional and simplistic interpretation of his contributions to British music and culture. In this seminar, students and instructor will consider his music, his career as a musician, and the cultural environment in which he operated in a more thoughtful way. We will do this in part by looking at his work through the lens of Englishness, exploring how and why particular historical and cultural concepts have become associated with his vocal and instrumental compositions and with his activities as a folksong collector. We will also interrogate his work as a conductor, editor, and writer through the prism of social and cultural history, to understand his broader impact on British musical communities and society more generally. By the end of the course, students will have gained a nuanced understanding of the composer’s career, works, and legacy. Students will undertake weekly readings, participate in class discussions, and develop an independent research project in relation to one of the seminar’s themes.
