TOPIC: Gustav Mahler and fin-de-siecle Vienna This course is an investigation into Mahler?s career and the aesthetics of his music, with emphasis given to his decade spent at Vienna from 1897 until 1907, as well as to his last years, which involved four extended stays in America preceding his final illness and death at Vienna in May 1911. Attention will be given both to the cultural context of Mahler?s activities and to his songs and symphonies, including his incomplete Tenth Symphony. Other issues to be addressed include Mahler?s ties to the Vienna Secession, literary and poetic influences, his connection to the Second Viennese School, and the reception history of his music.
