TOPIC: History of the Concert, 1750-present This 523 seminar approaches the history of the concert as social, cultural and musical institution. We will consider a range of case-studies centered on activities in Europe and the USA, spanning the period from 1750 to the present day, and including many types of concert ? symphony orchestra, chamber music, Lieder recital, etc. Themes under discussion will include: repertoires, canon formation, programming, taste, aesthetics, performers, acoustics, public/private space, audiences & listening, and performance practices. At root the seminar will ask ?why do we do what we do in the concert hall today??
