TOPIC: Altered States: Madness, Dreams and Visions on the Operatic Stage Composers and opera librettists have long been fascinated with the dramatic potential of altered states of consciousness. In this class we will consider the ways that opera scenes depicting ?altered states? are structured and function with the works of which they are a part. We will reflect upon the ways disturbing and pleasant ?altered states? might reflect societal fears and wishes. Repertoire to be studied will be eclectic?drawn from the 17th-21st centuries?and some attention will be paid to evolving practices. A core module in the course will concern developments in dynamic psychiatry and the history of ideas about the unconscious. The vast array of artists involved in opera?an intensely collaborative art form?has responded to these developments in varying and sometimes highly innovative ways. Students will complete one mid-term exam and a final exam, each with a listening component, and participate in a group presentation project that will be followed up with a written submission.
Restriction(s):
