FA26 ENGL 325 / GWS 395 - Topics in LGBT Literature and Film – Michael Shetina - Queer Humor, Queer Survival - Discourse about LGBTQ people and communities understandably emphasizes their resilience and survival. But they don’t just survive; they laugh too. This course takes that laughter seriously. We will examine how US-based LGBTQ writers, filmmakers, and comedians have deployed humor to address social ostracism, legal discrimination, global pandemics, and more. We will analyze and enjoy works across different media and genres, including fiction, essays, films, stand-up, and stage farce. We will study 20th century examples, such as John Waters’ cult movie Female Trouble and the stand-up comedy of Moms Mabley, and contemporary examples, such as Vera Drew’s superhero parody film The People’s Joker and Cole Escola’s Broadway farce Oh, Mary! We will use these texts to understand the personal and political uses of humor, explore the cultural factors and positionalities that influence what people find (or don’t find) funny, and engage with a complex and expansive variety of emotional responses to LGBTQ experiences.
