Introduction to the study of science fiction, the genre that has both contributed to scientific knowledge and attempted to make sense of the changes that have taken place in the world since the Enlightenment, the onset of industrialization, and the acceleration of technology. Texts are taken from a variety of literary and pop culture sources: pulps and magazines, novels and films, comics and TV shows.

FA26 ENGL 120 - Science Fiction - Ted Underwood - Introduction to the study of science fiction, a genre that tries to make sense of the changes that have taken place in the world since the Enlightenment and the onset of industrialization. In this semester, the course will emphasize questions about gender, embodiment, and autonomy in a world where technology makes it hard to draw crisp lines around a “self.” We will read novels, short stories, and essays by authors who include E. T. A. Hoffman, Ursula LeGuin, William Gibson, Martha Wells, Ted Chiang, Ann Leckie, and Donna Haraway. Texts will be primarily paper books, and written assignments include three in-class exams.
