FA26 ENGL 286 - Asian American Literature - Hannah Charity - In the course, we will read a survey of 20th and 21st century Asian American literature: novels, graphic novels, short stories, poems, and films written by Chinese, Filipinx, Indian, Korean, Taiwanese, and Vietnamese writers. We will read narratives around the themes of different forms of relationships, familial, friendship, and romantic, and consider the interlocking roles of race, gender, sexuality, and power. Paired with the readings will be ample discussions on the related social, cultural, racial, and political environments embedded in and orbiting around the texts. How do Asians American writers navigate through and resist the set images and stereotypes of the tiger mother, model minority, perpetual foreigner, and over- and de-sexualized Asian to construct their own narratives about interpersonal relationships. We will read scholarship in the field of Asian American Studies and Cute Studies to think about race, sexuality, cuteness, and power in these literary texts. Our class will be organized into three sections: Asian American Families and Expectations, Asian American Friendships and Loss, and Asian American Romances and Cuteness. To name some of the works we will read: sections from Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior and Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface, Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do, Hua Hsu’s Stay True, and Moderation by Elaine Castillo. For the media texts, we will watch romcoms: the adaptation of Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Fire Island, a queer retelling of Pride and Prejudice.
