Examines the history of urban centers, paying special attention to the relationship between the city and its surrounding territory, the impact of migration and immigration, the delineation of space and the transformation of the built environment, and the role of a city's inhabitants in creating social networks, political structures, and cultural institutions.

May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary.

Topic: Urban History Description: What is the “urban” and how have historians used the urban as a framework for understanding the past two hundred years? In this seminar, we will investigate the recent history of cities and urban centers around the world in the age of empire and decolonization. Key topics include urban planning and public health, empire and infrastructure, protests and social movements, the urban crisis, segregation and redlining, and environmental racism and sustainability in places such as Chicago, St. Louis, Berlin, Beirut, and Nairobi, as well as Champaign-Urbana and rural communities in the state of Illinois. Primary sources will include the built and natural environment, film, oral histories, as well as conventional archival materials.
