Description: This course is an overview of the history of the automobile, both in the country most closely associated with it—the United States—and around the globe. The history of the automobile began with technological breakthroughs in Europe before becoming a staple of American culture and society. In a relatively short period of time, automobiles brought radical changes to mobility, urban landscapes, culture, environments, and labor in nearly every corner of the world. Paul Gilroy has called the automobile the “ur-commodity” of modernity, that is, it has been at the center of many of the most momentous changes since the beginning of the twentieth century: freedom and mobility, work and play, urbanization and(de)colonization, to name a few. Accordingly, we’ll ask what went into making automobiles so central to the modern world and how they have shaped the world as a result.
