Seminar on undergraduate pedagogy for new graduate instructors. Individual sections will focus on the teaching of film, literature, or rhetoric.

0 to 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Approved for Letter and S/U grading. May be repeated by PhD students to a maximum of 8 hours as topics vary. Credit is not given for more than 8 hours, but course may be repeated for no credit. Prerequisite: Graduate standing in the Department of English or consent of instructor. Students needing the proseminar for their programs will be given priority enrollment.

FA24 ENGL 593 - The Teaching of Rhetoric - Kristi McDuffie: This is a course focused on the teaching of college composition. We will explore writing pedagogy theories and best practices in teaching writing, from cornerstone concepts like writing as a process to contemporary research on genre and transfer. We will theorize and develop pedagogical approaches to topics such as teaching rhetorical strategies, integrating language diversity, cultivating digital literacies, evaluating student writing, developing research skills, and cultivating teaching identities. The required work for this course includes weekly readings, active participation in class discussion, brief writing assignments, and developing reflective teaching materials. **ENGLISH Graduate MA, PhD Only
