Section Info: FA24: Haunted mansions. Sentient smart homes. Bewitched woodland huts. In the short stories we’ll read this semester, houses are more than mere buildings: they’re characters themselves, with their own desires and intentions. Some protect and provide for the people who live within them; others resent, confine, and even harm their inhabitants. What happens when a house’s desires and intentions are at odds with those of the people who live in them? How can homes represent safety for some, and oppression for others? And why does this thematic tension between homes and humans loom so large in the literary imagination? This semester, we’ll explore the domestic spaces of short fiction across genres and modalities, including classics like Poe’s “House of Usher,” Bradbury’s “The Veldt,” and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “Yellow Wallpaper,” as well as contemporary texts, comic books, podcasts, and anthology television series. Our focus on houses will allow us to consider the elements that make for compelling short fiction, including worldbuilding, narrative, and character development. We will also draw from literary and cultural theory to discuss how factors such as race, class, gender, and sexuality inform the relationship between inhabitant and home.
