FA24 ENGL 202 - Medieval Literature and Culture - Katherine Menendez - Welcome to Medieval Lit and Culture! In this class we will explore interconnected cultures in Europe, Asia, and Africa in the period between 500 and 1500CE. We will read a wide range of texts (in modern English translation) from Old and Middle English, Old Norse, Latin, Arabic, Persian, Japanese, and Ge’ez writers. As we read, we will seek to place the texts in their specific cultural backgrounds, and explore how the various genres we read–including prose, poetry, romance, chronicle, saga, and others–work within their cultural environments. At the same time, we will examine the cultural exchange evident from these texts to gain a better understanding of how people, ideas, and texts in the “global Middle Ages” travelled and influenced each other over these one thousand years.
