Section Info: FA24 - ENGL 220 - Literature and Science - Dave Morris - Literature helps us interrogate science in the most urgent questions of our time: what role does science play in our dreams (and nightmares) of the future? How do science and technology relate to social and political structures? How do science and technology affect the environment and non-human species? How do stories we tell and language we use influence science (and vice versa)? We’ll explore these questions through some fascinating novels and short stories selected from authors like Margaret Atwood, Octavia Butler, Becky Chambers, Andrea Kriz, Annalee Newitz, Malka Older, Nnedi Okorafor, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Kurt Vonnegut. Through these works, we’ll engage questions in life sciences, space exploration, climate science, and digital information technology. This course is designed for students from a variety of majors, and no formal training in sciences is needed. Work will include in-class activities, 4-5 short responses (1-2 pp. each), and 2 longer papers (4-6 pp. each). This course satisfies the General Education criteria for Humanities – Lit & Arts.
