FA24 ENGL 280 - Women Writers - Audrey Johnson - Scary Women: Women Writers and Horror - What happens when women write horror? What scares them? How do they scare us as readers? This section of ENGL 280 will focus on these questions as we read horror written by women. We’ll read selections ranging from the eighteenth century up until present day. Readings for the course may include Ann Radcliffe’s A Sicilian Romance (1790), Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), Tananarive Due’s Ghost Summer (2015), Kiersten White’s The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein (2019...to get the perspective of the women characters in Frankenstein), and Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic (2020).
