Prerequisite: Graduate standing in music; for undergraduates, consent of instructor.

This course will examine the principles of performing baroque music as revealed by contemporary tutors, original instruments, early editions and secondary sources. Issues critical to the performance of baroque music will be discussed, including ornamentation and improvised embellishment, choice of tempo and tempo flexibility, dynamics, pitch and temperament, articulation, use of vibrato, and rhythmic and notational conventions.
