Baroque Performance Practice

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Study of musical performance from ca. 1600-1750; discussion of musical instruments, ornamentation, basso continuo, etc., supplemented by demonstration performances using the University's collection of instruments.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing in music; for undergraduates, consent of instructor.

Issues critical to the performance of baroque music will be discussed, including ornamentation and improvised embellishment, choice of tempo and tempo flexibility, dynamics, pitch and temperament, articulation, use of vibrato, and rhythmic and notational conventions. Restriction(s): Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign. Restricted to students in the Music department.
