3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, junior standing in music or consent of instructor.

This course will explore keyboard practice and culture through primary sources dating between approximately 1400 and 1700. It will combine hands-on engagement with performance practices, with a focus on the cultural and material history of keyboard culture before the 18th century. Topics will include the keyboard in early colonial America, reading and playing from historical sources, instrument organology, keyboard practices and cultural identity, and the keyboard as a means of musical reproduction and transmission. Restriction(s): Restricted to students in the Music department.
