Topic: "SENIOR SEMINAR IN MUSICOLOGY." This seminar is aimed at juniors and seniors in the School of Music who wish to learn more about advanced academic study and to experience the benefits of collaborative learning in a small-group setting. Majors from areas outside of Musicology are welcome! One part of the class will involve the examination of a broad, instructor-led topic that will give students latitude to develop their own interests and discuss them with the seminar. Another part of the course will be devoted to skills in music-related research design and methods, and in scholarly and professional writing. Yet another segment will consider the uses to which advanced academic study in music can be put upon graduation (including graduate degrees in and beyond musicology, and how to prepare for applying for graduate school). In many of our class sessions, you will actively engage in discussions of prescribed readings or pre-assigned tasks; in others, you will take part in hands-on sessions with classroom materials. Across the semester, you will compile a reflective journal that documents your developing view of advanced study. You will also generate plans for a final project of your own choosing (which can, if desired, be a blueprint for your senior project/thesis, MUS 299). Credit will be given for attending Musicology Colloquia (outside of class hours) or other campus lectures of interest.
