Section Info:
ENGL 505, Writing Studies - Mortensen, P. - This course has been taught annually for nearly four decades—it first appeared in the university’s Courses Catalog in 1994—and in that time its description has remained unchanged: “Reviews theory and research on the social and historical development of writing systems, including consideration of the relationship between oral and written language, writing and other graphic representation systems, alternative technologies, the evolution of writing systems, and the social functions of literacy.” Through reading, research, discussion, and writing, we will explore the contours of Writing Studies today, evaluate the past referenced in the 1994 course description, and speculate about the future that new Writing Studies graduate students will have an opportunity to build with their scholarship. At semester’s end, we will entertain the possibility that the 1994 course description is outdated, and—easier said than done—we may propose a revision.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
