Reviews theory and research on the social and historical development of writing systems, including consideration of the relationship between oral and written language, writing and other graphic representation systems, alternative technologies, the evolution of writing systems, and the social functions of literacy.

Same as CI 563. Prerequisite: Admission to the graduate programs of a unit offering the graduate specialization in Writing Studies, or consent of instructor.

FA22 - ENGL 505, Lindsay Russell This seminar offers an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of writing studies which explores the theory, research, and practice of writing. It answers basic questions about writing: what it is, what it accomplishes, how it has developed and diversified historically, and how human activities and social systems have come to depend on it. The course also poses questions about the field of writing studies: what it is; where it sits in relation to various fields and disciplines; how its primary theories, methods, and key terms account for the role of writing in relation to power, ideology, identity, institutionality, sociality, and more.
