Informal Learning & Pedagogies
Section Info:
This course will explore informal learning as it occurs in a variety of contexts, including libraries, museums & makerspaces. After a brief review of existing literature on the spectrum of formal, semi-formal & informal learning, students will spend time working on prompts from partner organizations from the local community to reflect on their own learning process, evaluate curriculum, develop lesson plans & compare models of assessment that intersect w/social science research methods. Furthermore, the course will draw upon scholarship in fields related to User Experience & Interaction Design. Participants will be taught to make digital & physical mockups for use in areas such as application development, the design of technology learning spaces, workshop models or interactive museum exhibits. Our focus will be less on reading/writing & more on deliverables recognized in related education-oriented fields like multi-media reports, online tutorials & live presentations or instruction. Much of what we write, create, and document now exists exclusively on the web, and web archiving —the process of collecting, preserving, and providing access to web materials —is what enables individuals to build and maintain collections of these at-risk resources. This course will teach students the mechanics of web archiving and its relation to familiar archival concepts, like collection building and appraisal, access and use, and ethics. Students in this course will also have the chance to complete hands-on work with web archiving tools like Archive-It and Webrecorder.io. Seminar in Contemporary Issues: Global Principles - Local Libraries This 2-credit course provides students with a broad overview of library principles in a global context. It examines issues of freedom of access to information and expression, copyright, privacy and open access, and conservation of heritage. The course touches on the practical with a look at the cross-cultural workplace and view into library associations and organizations whose work contributes to the global library field. The course prepares students to think globally, preparing them to pursue career paths as aware information professionals. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate awareness of core library principles applied both inside and outside of one's own region and/or culture. 2. Discuss the issues facing libraries, library services and the library profession in international and local contexts. 3. Identify and critically assess the roles and contributions of professional organizations, intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental agencies working internationally on foundational library principles. 4. Analyze library services and systems, successes and challenges of international library environments, within their local contexts. 5. Apply a critical mindset to international librarianship activities in order to impact their role as future global librarians.
