Variety of newly developed and advanced topics courses within the field of Book History, intended to augment the existing Information Sciences curricula.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. 2 to 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated in the same or separate semesters to a maximum of 16 hours, if topics vary.

Credit: 2 hours Section Title: Bookbinding: Hist, Princ, Prac Section Info: A hands-on exploration of multiple styles of bookbinding. Students will acquire fundamental technical knowledge by creating a variety of book structures using traditional tools and materials. An appreciation of the history of bindings will be gained through readings and virtual visits to Rare Book and Manuscript Rooms. There is a $35.00 class material fee. Credit: 2 hours Section Title: Book as a Physical Object Section Info: Examines all the PHYSICAL aspects of books and how these inform us of the books' manufacture and place in a scholarly world. Covers all aspects of book production, from the earliest books to computers, and concentrates on their physical aspects. The course will look at all kinds of manifestations and features of codices that will useful in cataloging and bibliographical description, in reading scholarly bibliographies, in deciphering booksellers' catalogs, and in describing copy-specific information for finding aids. Credit: 4 hours Section Title: History of the Book Section Info: Explores the role of the book in the production and transmission of knowledge through time. Major themes include the design, materiality, and performance of reading and writing technologies. Particular attention will be paid to the graphic representation and visualization of information across media. Students will examine different approaches to the study of books and documents, including those of palaeography, diplomatics, bibliography, art history, musicology, textual criticism, digital humanities, and new media studies.
