Examines the history of urban centers, paying special attention to the relationship between the city and its surrounding territory, the impact of migration and immigration, the delineation of space and the transformation of the built environment, and the role of a city's inhabitants in creating social networks, political structures, and cultural institutions.

May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary.

Topic: Urban History Description: This course will examine the history of U.S. cities since World War II. Readings and class discussions will place special emphasis on urban social movements (e.g., campaigns for school desegregation, fair housing, and labor rights) and urban cultural forms (e.g., spectator sports, beat poetry, hip hop) as we explore the ways in which everyday people shaped and experienced the major transformations of urban life in the decades since 1945. Writing assignments will include short reading responses, primary documents analyses, and a final project on a relevant topic of your choice.
