Survey of the early history of the continent, nineteenth century developments, and the period of colonial occupation and independence, with particular focus on case studies from East Africa, South Africa and West Africa at the conclusion of the term.

Section Info: Description: From Timbuktu to Zanzibar, Africans throughout history have played key roles as in developing an array of cultural, economic, and political systems. How, then, do we understand the various forces that brought this diverse continent to its current less than ideal place in global imaginations and news cycles? This course will survey key moments and places in African history from some of its early civilizations through to the twenty first century. We will consistently position Africa within global events and trends, while also delving deep into the complex realities of particular case studies. Along with historical knowledge, the class seeks to build basic familiarity with African geography and provides information about a few of Africa's thousands of languages. The course, incorporating lectures, discussions, and written reflections, will help students develop a range of useful skills, including strategic reading, writing, persuasive debate, and public speaking.
