Description: This history survey course focuses on the formation and foundation of the United States. In this course, we cover first contact between European settlers and Native Americans; colonization; the Revolution and the Early Republic; slavery and the debates and conflicts that arose from it. It concludes in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Throughout, students will engage with a variety of primary sources left behind by a diverse range of historical actors both well-known and obscure. Finally, students will gain a greater understanding of how conflict, confrontation, and compromise became integral to the formation of the nation.
