The course begins with an examination of the Atlantic slave trade and Indian Ocean economy during the early modern period, proceeds to an investigation of the economic transformations wrought by European empires in Africa and Asia during the nineteenth century, and then explores the emergence of offshore finance in the mid-twentieth century. The course concludes by considering the potential implications of the 2008 financial crisis for the future of global capitalism. Throughout, we will pay close attention to how the structures of global capitalism shaped the everyday economic lives of ordinary men and women: slaves and wage-laborers, peasants and artisans, shopkeepers and sailors. In addition to short writing assignments analyzing assigned readings, students will write a research paper on a topic related to global capitalism in history.
