Credit: 3 hours.

Capstone course required of all majors. Students will make history by researching and writing a work of original scholarship. Several of these seminars are offered each term and each focuses on a special topic, thus allowing students with similar interests to work through the process of gathering, interpreting, and organizing historical evidence under the direction of an expert in the field. The topics on offer each semester will be listed in the Class Schedule and described in the department's course guide at http://www.history.illinois.edu.

3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours.

Topic: America and the War in Iraq Description: This seminar will explore the invasion of Iraq by the United States in 2003, the occupation, the subsequent insurgency and civil war, and the “surge” in 2007. It will focus on actors in Washington DC, soldiers in the field, and veterans back home, as well as civilians in Iraq. Students will be expected to read and discuss the issues and complete a capstone research paper of their own design.

Topic: Ancient Coinage Description: This course will trace the history of ancient coinage from the origins of coinage in Asia Minor and Greece in the seventh century BCE to the coinages of the Roman Republic, Roman Empire, and barbarian successor states. Particular emphasis will be devoted to the role of coins as an element of material culture, and to looking at coins in both their economic and symbolic roles. Students will gain hands-on experience with actual ancient coins.
