Title: Global History through the African Diaspora Description: This course examines the major events of the 1st half of the 20th century, including the World Wars, Harlem Renaissance, Marxism, Civil Rights, and decolonization through the lens of the African Diaspora. Histories of the diaspora show us how people in the past theorized and practiced global connections even before modern technologies were available. They also push us to broaden our idea of what events and actors are important to study in history. Connections and exchanges will be major themes of the course. Students will develop the tools and skills of historical knowledge and analysis both orally, and in written form. They will engage with a variety of primary sources, such as film, performance and literature, as well as interdisciplinary secondary sources. They will be required and encouraged to employ digital technologies for assignments and projects.
